The high‑sensitivity erythrocyte sedimentation rate (Hs ESR) is a laboratory test that measures how quickly red blood cells settle at the bottom of a vertical tube over one hour. It is a non‑specific indicator of inflammation, infection, or tissue injury. Because the test is simple, inexpensive, and widely available, it is often ordered as a first‑line screening tool in clinical practice.

How the test is performed

Blood is drawn into a tube containing an anticoagulant, usually sodium citrate.
